Weapon/armor upgrades in Guild Wars

Hi guys, I just started playing GW, and I like it, but I have a few questions. First of all, how come I read in some online reviews that the hired allies that you lead around will have their gear (weapons and armor) upgraded as they progress, and the game story moves on? Because unless I'm doing something terribly wrong, that just isn't true. Can someone enlighten me in this matter? TY.
Do you mean heroes? Like, in Nightfall? In that case yes, their armor is auto upgradable, but no, their weapons are not. Which is a good thing, of course, as they are fully customizable – you can choose who uses what and when, and that goes for skills and runes too, of course.
