So I found out that there is a January 2005 BIOS upgrade available for my computer. My current Phoenix-Award BIOS 6.00 is 3 years old. Only problem is it costs $59.95 to upgrade. I haven't ever really heard of paying for this stuff, anyone know if there is a way to get it for free?

Thx. =D

Don't do it unless you need to. Free or not.

If you bought a motherboard early on in its release, it's a good idea to upgrade. Most boards have reboot bugs and stuff early on that require a BIOS flash to get rid of.

sounds like possibly whats causing my issues with new kingston ram. i'm using an MSI K7N2 Delta-L motherboard with an AMD Athlon 1800+ processor and my bios is the same Phoenix-Bios 6.00 or whatever.

wish i knew if that was the easy fix.

You can't use like ddr500 ram with those boards because voltages and timings standard with that type of ram isn't supported with that board.

Prolly get it to work fine if you mess with timings and stuff with that board. It will be a lot of .. timing changes, reboot, stress test or MB jumper reset, rinse and repeat till you find a stable setup. Then write it down Razz

Also, I never use MSI boards anymore for anything and will not recommend em.. but don't they just use AMI and award bios? How did it get a pheonix bios on it

Edit: Yeah, was right.. hmmm http://216.158.218.35/edoc/bios_uploads/6570v58.zip is for that board you listed, and date stamped 8/5/2004

And don't DL that and flash it without checking first, just not good practice hehe.. even though it's right!

I've just made so many MSI boards dead by being anal about memory crap and bios configs it's funny haha

Honestly, who in thier right mind starts to flash and goes oh shit I DLed the wrong version and stops it mid flash! haha

Rennol go here and DL cpuz. It will tell ya what you are using. If it's an older board it might be a little vague but at least you can get chipset info and go from there.

harkov, were you referring to me in that link/setup for the bios?

as for your comments, the ram is ddr 400. what i'm not understanding is that when i built this machine like 2 years ago i bought a stick of kingston value ram. 512 stick model KVR400X64C3A/512. within the past 2 weeks i bought another 1g of ram. its a kit, so 2 sticks. its also the exact same model. KVR400X64C3AK/1G. the only difference is the K/1G as opposed to the /512 because i got 2.
