I think I remember someone posting a link on here awhlie ago (could have even been AbiWorld or VnBoards) of a stand alone program you can make 3D worlds with and walk around in first person.

Anyone remember what I'm talking about?

Not sure about the walk around part but Bryce works for making 3d landscapes, has some advanced animation stuff too I never used

Unreal Tournament comes with a world builder, you could always use that. It's actually a lot of work though.

But that would require Unreal to run it. The one I'm talking about let you import stuff from AutoCAD, 3dsmax, etc.

Half Life and HL2 both use "Hammer"

Any version of the original hl would act as your exploration client.

If you have hl2 on steam you can downlaod a very robust world builder right now.

If you don't own hl2 you are bannished from realpoor!

Go into steam and download the SDK (Software Developers Kit) and you already have the tools!

It's easy, it's fun, and since you own hl2 it's free.

Also, there is a map design contest right now to win $5k for a deathmatch map that wins the compitition. Good insentive to start now.
