Rather than going to a doc, I have some amoxicillan leftover from getting sick a while back. The bottle itself says 'discard after 3/26/04' but I was wondering if it would still be safe to take them to try and kick whatever I got, which, apparently is a severe viral infection; better news than mono/strep that was in question the prior days. my worry is that they may even go bad before that date.
i just don't want to take this if it's only going to make me more sick. if anyone knows when they lose effectiveness or go bad or could actually harm me (my fever-fried brain might be overthinking this), plz help =/

If you have a viral infection, amoxicillin will not do anything for it. Antibiotics do not help viral infections in the least. Bacterial infections are a different story.
As per taking them, with an antibiotic, you must give the antibiotic time to build up in your system. That is why dr's tell you to continue taking them, even after your symptoms improve, to prevent them from coming back. You are likely to not have enough left in the bottle to treat a bacterial / microbial infection.
Like I said, if you have a Viral infection, taking antibiotics will not do shit for you, and will be bad in the long run.
I recommend taking some tylenol for the fever and drinking tons of water. You need to give your body the correct tools to help it fight the virus. Hydration and plenty of rest are two very important parts to recovery.

In regards to them going bad, typically they are safe for 1 year or so after manufacture. They do deteriorate after that and become poisonous to your liver and other organs. You can safely use them up to the expiration date.
In regards to using them on viral infections: Antibiotics do nothing for viral infections. If you feel better from taking them, it's merely a placebo effect. Bacterial infections are cured by antibiotics.
They ruled out mono and strep, so I am assuming they did a throat culture AND a blood test?
Mono/scarlet fever/hepatitis C have some similar symptoms and it usually takes a bloodtest to discern that you do NOT have the latter two...
Heh, my ex was ill before our wedding way back in 1978--he had bloodwork done to determine what was wrong because the doctors were unable to confirm it otherwise.
He had mono. We got married anyway, him with a 104 fever the day of our wedding and at the reception...I never contracted it myself, thankfully
Tylenol for fever, water for hydration, rest...that's bout it for you for now.
Hope you feel better soon, hon!
